Why is Google Taking Money From “Birthers”?
If Barack Obama weren’t of African heritage and didn’t have a funny name, to sanction and profit from the notion that the president of the United States is not a citizen would be borderline treasonous.
Google, it appears, is doing just that:
Barack Obama - polling-nation.com/obama -
1-minute Poll Obama Citizenship, Africa or USA?
The thoroughly discredited “birther” movement maintains, contrary to all available material evidence, not only that Obama is not a native-born U.S. citizen, but that we’ve been duped into beleving that he is by an international conspiracy.
Why is Google taking money from birthers, or birther affiliates, or people who legitimize birthers with some variation of “Well, it’s a controversial issue, let’s ask the American people their opinion on a matter of fact”?
Google’s Ads in Gmail policy skirts the question of its unsavory endorsements, emphasizing instead their concern for our privacy. But a look into Google’s AdSense Program policies enumerates the following content guidelines:
Sites with Google ads may not include or link to:
- Pornography, adult or mature content
- Violent content
- Content related to racial intolerance or advocacy against any individual, group or organisation
- Excessive profanity
- Hacking/cracking content
- Gambling or casino-related content
- Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia content
- Sales of beer or hard alcohol
- Sales of tobacco or tobacco-related products
- Sales of prescription drugs
- Sales of weapons or ammunition (e.g. firearms, firearm components, fighting knives, stun guns)
- Sales of products that are replicas or imitations of designer goods
- Sales or distribution of coursework or student essays
- Content regarding programs which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails
- Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others
I suppose polling-nation.com skirts the third guideline as other agents of intolerance do, with the pathetic explanation that it’s not overtly stating that President Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen. (For the record, Rep. Campbell acknowledges that Obama was born in Hawaii: “As far as I know.”) Rather, polling-nation.com is just starting a discussion, opening our minds up to the possibility that he might not be. This isn’t “advocacy against any individual,” it’s just an invitation to ponder whether our most exotic president to date really is an American and thus president after all. No advocacy at all.
Google’s AdSense has a history of taking money from the shadiest businesses. From counterfeit shoes to moronic polls I’ve seen a lot of crap they allow. I think their “friendly” reputation and general competence allow them to slide unchecked in instances like this. Another company like Microsoft would be subject to a lot more scrutiny. Good article, Megan.
