Heavenly Creatures
Peter Jackson caught the attention of every moviegoer in the world with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but his best film remains this kinetic depiction of the notorious 1954 Parker-Hulme Murder in New Zealand. In the hands of nearly any other director, this story would be told in a self-serious tone, but Jackson maintains a blistering pace and matches the deliriousness of the fantasizing best friends at the movie’s center. Seriously, just watch this scene in which Melanie Lynskey escapes into “The Fourth World” during her first sexual experience. Heavenly Creatures also presents a side of Kate Winslet we rarely get to see these days; as talented as she is, Winslet has never taken as many chances as she does here. Jackson is tackling teenage girls and tragedy for a second time this winter, but I highly doubt it will measure up to this one.
