Dog Day Afternoon

Josh Riedel

The “only 30%-true” story of what happens when you try to rob a bank that doesn’t have any money in it. Set in 1970s Brooklyn, Sonny (Al Pacino), a bisexual anti-establishment Vietnam War veteran turned bank robber, needs money for his suicidal wife’s sex reassignment surgery. Most captivating of all performances in this film is that of the tellers: without any money left in the bank to hand over, they’re freed from the trappings of transactional relationships; instead of exchanging insincere greetings and money and then moving to the next in line, they smoke and eat pizza with the two robbers, and in the process do most of the work towards uncovering and exploring the men’s motivations and neuroses.
