Yesterday, a late-50s Methodist minister in Southeast Portland, Oregon, came out to his congregation as a FTM transgendered person. Tricky and risky considering that Methodism doctrinally bars gays from the faith but often embraces them in practice. Will he be “gay” for Methodists? What will that mean? His congregation’s reaction: thunderous applause.
