Before Sunrise/Sunset

Eric Freeman

Two young college students—an American man, Jesse (Ethan Hawke), and a French woman, Celine (Julie Delpy)—meet on a train to Vienna. They spend all night together and agree to meet in Vienna again a year later. Nine years later, Celine runs into Jesse in Paris during a reading for his new novel. They walk around the city for ninety minutes. Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset don’t have much in the way of plot, but they’re the type of movie you rarely see in America: natural talkfests between intelligent characters with great chemistry. As befits the characters’ age, the first film is more free-flowing, with Jesse and Celine wandering through a foreign city and getting to know each other. The sequel is more direct—they talk about why they didn’t return to Vienna, missed opportunities, and the responsibilities that come with age. This might all sound dull, but every exchange is gripping, and Before Sunset has one of the most satisfying open-ended conclusions you’ll ever see.
