The Devil Makes Three’s Do Wrong Right

For those diehards who insist that punk rock is more of an attitude than a genre of music, the new album by The Devil Makes Three, Do Wrong Right, is a welcome vindication. Acoustic and drummer-less, this trio injects a punk sensibility into their Americana-flavored rockabilly and bluegrass. Like their mohawked counterparts, The Devil Makes Three explore the zone between sheep and sinner, morality and the Man, all the while drinking too much whiskey and going down swinging at the local watering hole’s Saturday night brawl. With its stomping banjo and dire Biblical imagery, “Help Yourself” will be played at the hoedown on the eve of the apocalypse. “Poison Trees” promises that “this is the era of eternal sleep,” as you sit on your porch at midnight, shotgun across your lap, waiting for the devil to come collect your soul. The gamblin’ man blues of “Aces and Twos” is like remembering, through the haze of a hangover, the poker game that lost you the family homestead. So pull up a stool, grab a dusty pint glass, slip a nickel into the jukebox and give Do Wrong Right a spin. – Aysha Pamukcu
