Community
30 Rock and The Office are NBC’s best shows, but they’re at their best doing very different things: 30 Rock when it’s firing on all madcap cylinders, and The Office when it taps into a strong emotional storyline. The network’s new sitcom, Community, tries a little of both by placing Jeff (The Soup’s Joel McHale), a sarcastic lawyer in need of a college degree after being found of falsifying his credentials, into a community college setting with a number of oddballs: Britta (Gillian Jacobs), an attractive woman who originally dropped out of school to help Guatemalan poor because it might impress Radiohead; Pierce (Chevy Chase), a moist towelette impresario who says lots of really bizarre and racist things, including an introductory Spanish presentation that somehow manages to be extremely critical of Israel; Abed (Danny Pudi), a first-generation Palestinian-American who has no idea how to function around other people; plus many more. The explicit plot of the show involves Jeff trying to get with Britta, but it’s more about his needing to stop lying and become genuine. To its credit, the show’s humor mirrors this arc — it’s a mixture of pop culture references (including a number of great Robin Williams bits in the third episode) and character-based jokes. The first three episodes are on Hulu. It needs as many viewers as it can get. – Eric Freeman
