The Deer Hunter

A raucous steeltown Russian wedding and several horrifying rounds of Russian roulette: this three-hour masterpiece has it all, including John Cazale (The Godfather’s Fredo), who always seems to play a man with a gun to his head. Wonderfully refreshing to watch in this era of Apatow, Michael Cimino’s chronicle of the horrors of Vietnam PTSD poses mightily relevant questions about patriotism and “support our troops”-style hypocrisy. Surprisingly, the most striking scenes in this intense and frankly brutal movie are its subtle depictions of nascent adulthood. The popularly accessible image of the modern twentysomething is really just an older, huskier teen—more mobile device than human. The newly minted grownups in this film bury their friend and his horrifying secret (they don’t have an app for that) without adult supervision or any direction from their community. They are the community now. The final scene of the movie is an awkward post-funeral brunch with more whiskey shots than words. Without an experienced adult to provide guidance or context, the cast nervously breaks into song: “God Bless America.” A fascinating portrayal of the generation that would become the parents of either Macs or PCs.  – Adam Schaefer
