The Power Broker

John Collins

Robert Moses

Robert Moses was one bad mother. This is one of the prime takeaways of Robert Caro’s biography of Moses, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York. Inspired by Jane Jacobs’ groundbreaking work The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Caro outlines Moses’s journey from starry-eyed idealist from “Our Crowd” in New York to stone cold, life-ruining megalomaniacal power-addict. On the way, you’re treated to a very detailed look at how most of the roads and parks in NYC and Long Island got around to being made; the book lacks no detail, clocking in at about 1200 pages. By the end of it, one is left with an understanding of the power afforded to those who Get Things Done and the utterly corrosive effect it has on the vitality of cities. This is what happens to American society when the vision to change our manmade environment is crippled by the mores of the upper and upper-middle classes. A must-read for anyone remotely interested in cities, New York City, or politics of any sort.  – John Collins
