Lasagna Cat

We all know that Garfield Minus Garfield brilliantly exposes just how lonely and depressing Jon Arbuckle’s life is, but to get the full terrifying look into the warped mind of Garfield’s creator, Jim Davis, you need to check out Lasagna Cat. Each short clip features a live-action reenactment of a particular strip, followed by a music video remix. The deadpan reenactments (featuring humans in animal costumes) reveal the full absurdity of what has been unleashed on America’s collective psyche on a daily basis for the past three decades. Each “punchline” is followed with a rim shot and a laugh track which elevates Garfield to a Kaufmanesque level of anti-humor brilliance. While the world of Garfield Minus Garfield is admittedly quite disturbing, it doesn’t compare to the creepiness of what actually occurs in those three little boxes. If the clips featured just the reenactments, they’d already be my favorite minute-long clips in the world, but the music video remixes make Lasagna Cat even better; these masterfully produced tributes to Jim Davis somehow dial up the insanity level of the project several notches. To get a taste, watch Garfield dancing to Enrique Iglesias. – Nate Jones
