Western popular understanding of “shamanism” is sketchy, if sometimes somewhat sophisticated. Stanley Krippner clarifies the actual traditions of shamanism—Augustinianly pragmatic, even apophatic! That the pop-psychology overtones of Krippner’s talk leave it open to all sorts of mockery should be seen as an occasion for reflection.
