The Goslings Grandeur of Hair

A few summers back, a friend and I were driving down a dark suburban street outside Sacramento on a warm night. The Volvo station wagon suddenly illuminated a figure walking down the bike lane. He glared through the headlights and smiled at us from beyond the windshield. We sped up and locked the doors. Menacing and tall, this was a Magic Mean Bastard™, on his way back from the crossroads of Highways 69 and 41. Nothing really so remarkable about his appearance set off any warning signals, but there was something not really right at the center, or something not there that should be. The Goslings make Magic Mean Bastard™ music. The main body of the mix is filled with ridiculously loud and harsh distortion, but what makes charmers like “Croatan” and “Sanibel” float well are the absolutely subtle melodic lines that quietly fill in the space above and below the wash. Grandeur of Hair is their finest release, and thankfully has been reprinted. If you have a bit more patience and like Grandeur, Heaven of Animals (featuring Warmth) is also worthwhile. But listen to Grandeur first.  – Scott Coomes
