When Joan Roughgarden set out to explain why animals from killer whales to giraffes have gay orgies, she “quickly realized that most scientists are pretty dismissive about same-sex sexuality in vertebrates.” But the science shows homosex to be a normal fact of animal life. That didn’t stop an Illinois school district from suspending a teacher for bringing Roughgarden’s work to the attention of his class.
