Where the Action Is!

Rhino Records has a history of releasing thoughtful and exhaustive compilation albums, and their latest, Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968, is no exception. This 101-song boxed set is the most recent installment in the Nuggets series, which attempts to chronicle “the alternative musical history of the 1960’s… what could have happened had music charted on merit alone.” And that’s what sets this compilation apart: its balance between specificity and scope. It’s fascinating to hear ’60s pop and rock through the filter of Hollywood venues like the Troubadour and Whiskey a Go Go. LA all-stars like The Doors and The Beach Boys are duly represented, but the collection really shines by showcasing local acts that only achieved regional popularity, or remained underground altogether. Highlights include swaggering garage tracks like The Seeds’ “Tripmaker” or Thee Midniters’ “Jump, Jive & Harmonize.” But if that’s not your bag, never fear: there’s plenty of surf, folk-rock, and even some early psychedelia. If you’ve ever wanted to capture the sounds of cruising down Sunset Strip in a Ford Galaxie with your steady, this is your comp. – Aysha Pamukcu
