Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Season Finale

Curb Your Enthusiasm's Seinfeld Reunion

Curb Your Enthusiasm ends its strong seventh season with a terrific forty-minute episode featuring most of a Seinfeld reunion meta-episode. The Seinfeld reunion-within-an-episode is itself very funny. George Costanza has made a fortune from an iPhone application called the “iToilet” — which helps wayward incontinents find relief — but loses everything to Bernie Madoff. Apart from its funny Seinfeld shenanigans, the season finale revolves around Larry’s quest to get back together with Cheryl, the uncomfortable etiquette of tipping for minor favors, the nefarious uses of tinted windows, and the politics of (not) using coasters on other people’s expensive wooden furniture. That is, we’re in typical Curb territory. Larry David is a genius at exploring those zones of social life where tacit norms fall apart and where small insults can escalate uncontrollably. This subject matter was also the foundation of Seinfeld’s genius, which is why this season has soared where previous attempts at meta-performance — namely, Larry’s appearance in The Producers in Season 4 — failed.  This is Curb at its best. We can only hope the DVD contains the full Seinfeld meta-episode.  – Lee Konstantinou
