Better Off Ted

In 2002, Victor Fresco created the brilliant-but-canceled Andy Richter Controls the Universe, a comedy about a short-story writer stuck in a soul-sucking job with a corporate behemoth. Jokes flew fast, and the show was a worthy forerunner to the likes of Arrested Development and 30 Rock. Last spring, Fresco premiered Better Off Ted, a comedy about the head of the R&D department who acknowledges that he has a soul-sucking job with a corporate behemoth and performs his duties damn well anyway. Ted Crisp (Jay Harrington) is comfortable in his job and knows Veridian Dynamics is a heartless company, but he either doesn’t have enough moral sense to change things or realizes other potential employers wouldn’t be much better. The humor is typical Fresco: a mix of eccentric whimsy and sharp satire. Most of the humor comes from the excellent supporting cast, including Andrea Anders as a sassy middle manager who keeps her sanity by stealing endless amounts of creamer and Jonathan Slavin and Malcolm Barrett as terminally overworked scientists who develop creepy products like killer pumpkins and synthetic meat that tastes like despair. But the standout is Portia De Rossi as Ted’s boss, an ice queen with no regard for human emotion. As a bonus, there are also regular ads that explain just which essential services Veridian provides to the mindless drones of society. Watch full episodes at abc.com. – Eric Freeman
