Ten and Tracer

As a concept, the netlabel is one of my favorite things. Creative-Commons Licensed, free to download, good quality mp3s — the netlabel provides a space in which the guy making electronic music in his bedroom has a slightly better chance of being heard by appreciative listeners. But the freedom of the netlabel also means that there’s a lot to sort through, and the ratio of wheat to chaff is pretty low. So, briefly, here’s one that I’ve been digging lately. Zymogen is an Italian netlabel with twenty-four releases on offer since late 2005. I haven’t listened to all of them, but the ones I have heard have been heavily on the ambient side — and they’ve been good. As a genre, ambient is tough, but I’ve happily kept releases like the Sky Diary Edits in regular rotation since I first found Zymogen two years ago. Also check out star of the ambient scene Ten and Tracer’s EP, as well as the excellent offerings from Muhr and Oskar Hallbert. And those are only the ones I’ve listened to myself—I’m looking forward to sitting down with the rest of them.  – Lauren Caldwell
