Childish Gambino’s “Bitch Look at Me Now”
It’s probably necessary to mention that I’m a huge fan of Community. It’s probably less necessary to mention that I’m a huger fan of Chevy Chase, but Spies Like Us is in my DVD player, so it seemed relevant. That said, my admiration for the show that made Chevy relevant again has virtually nothing to do with my appreciation of “Bitch Look at Me Now” by Childish Gambino. If you don’t recognize that sub-Wu Tang Clan moniker as the rap persona of Donald Glover, Community’s Troy, that’s alright. As the song says, this is just a hobby because he gets bored if he’s not doing something. But the thing is, Childish Gambino would be blowing up rap blogs even if he were in no way related to NBC comedies. There’s the Grizzly Bear backing, the pop culture-laden lyrics, and the fact that Glover is actually pretty nice on the mic. In the 11 days since I downloaded his I Am Just a Rapper, I’ve listened to this song at least once a day and I’m a hater. It’s charming that Glover doesn’t even remove the lyrics to “Two Weeks,” and that he clearly cares about rapping. Big ups. – Trey Kerby
