The American Song Poem Anthology

Donny Bridges

I Like Yellow Things

Poetry is a lot like sex: when it’s good it’s amazing; when it’s awful, hilarity ensues. Both a poet’s & a lover’s skill-level becomes apparent very quickly, and it’s never a good sign if either involves Jimmy Carter. It’s tough to tell whether a typical song poem lyricist was acting out of vanity or simply had their naïveté exploited, but no matter the intent, the schlock put to music through these vanity presses make Soulja Boy look like Ira Gershwin. From the stultifying mundanity of “I Like Yellow Things” to the Lovecraftian nightmare that is “Octopus Woman Please Let Me Go,” a good number relics from the ASP unspeakable vault (of doom) can be found at the blog of WFMU. The pickings include some perfectly serviceable if clumsy songs, some druggy and sexist choices, and others I just can’t explain. There’s even an eerie portent of the Twilight series in “Vampire Husband.” These songs are more than just opportunities for lulz; they serve as a reminder that my generation isn’t even unique in our narcissistic pseudo-creativity. This sort of artistic Dunning-Kruger effect did not arise with the advent of Blogger & YouTube, but is instead as old as song and literature themselves. I guess we’re just lucky that cavemen didn’t have LiveJournals.  – Donny Bridges
